Getting some exposure
January 13th, 2006A good way to get web site’s listed on search engines, particularly Google, is to try and get as many links as possible to your site from other sites. So here’s me being cheeky…
One site I’ve been working on recently is that of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in East Grinstead. It’s a basic info site for people thinking of starting the award as well as current participants. Much of the details about the actual award can be found on the official site, so we just concentrate on what’s going on at the Wallis Open Award Centre.
The site is OO PHP based with a few nifty features as well as a reasonably clean CSS-structured layout (although the W3C validator tells me I still have some work to do). I stole the news management code written for East Grinstead Town Council and stuck that on there for quick updates to the news section. I’ve also implemented Easy PHP Calendar which is a very handy app for managing calendar entries.
I’m also going to link to St. John Ambulance – Felbridge and East Grinstead Division – another of my projects, although as this site’s been around since about 1998, it’s visibility is pretty good.

It’s also worth noting that you can pilfer a little Google PageRank from the sites that link to you.
For instance, if a site with a PageRank of 7 is the ONLY link to your site, your site usually picks up a PageRank of 6. I say “usually” because Google are clever at manipulating this aspect of the PageRank system and sometimes other things will bring the PageRank back down again.
Never the less, a few links from high PageRank sites will do more for you than loads of links from low PageRank sites…

Interesting to know – thanks Tim.

I’ve heard that the page rank that you glean from other sites also depends on how closely related their content is to the content on your site.
